Housed in an old heritage house along Lebuh Melayu in George Town, Penang, Chao Xuan 潮轩 is one new Chinese restaurant to the area. Its menu is packed of traditional Teo Chew delights and snacks to thrill your taste buds.

Duck meat kinda hard to chew , and big portion of mianxian. The Teochew noodles are not delicious because they lack aroma, but big portion . Porridge taste normal , the way presentation was good ,fried egg is taste sweet 😅 but big portions…

We came back here in late May 2026, we found the quality of the food has deteriorated. The fried Teow Chew kuik is too oily and looks that they have been deep fried and fried again. The dried BBQ pork noodle is a bit salty.

It was alright, but personally, I thought the pickled mustard greens were a bit too sour. As for the braised pork, Taiwan's version is definitely the better choice. Everything else was good, even the buttered bread was delicious.

I went there because I wanted to eat porridge in the morning. Unlike Thai porridge, it didn't contain garlic or anything like that, so it was a very simple porridge and delicious. I prefer the Thai omelet.

*Overrated and major hygiene concerns* I was honestly disappointed. While the noodle portion is generous and the texture had potential, they were overcooked and soggy. The desserts and kuih were just okay—nothing special.

Penang is the food paradise, but I decided to have my first meal at Chai Xuan. Cosy restaurant with nice deco and very cooling in such a hot day. I ordered the porridge set so it is not that filling and I can still try other food later.

I chose this restaurant based on a Penang blogger's recommendation, and it was truly awful 🥲🥲 The chives were bitter, and the red rice cake was mushy and tasteless 🥲.

The food is expensive but not well made. Is the egg in the vegetable garden sweet?? The braised food is not as good as the one in Taiwan, and the barbecued pork is not as good as that in Guangzhou.

It's too hard to find parking in this area, not worth it to waste so much time finding parking just for a mediocre meal, the food is ready made and will be microwaved before serving, coffee is good though.

I was just passing by and bought some of their vegetable cakes to go. They were delicious and worth recommending. The atmosphere in the shop was great. I'll try their Chaozhou cuisine another day.
